Our Approach to Preservation Projects

Research and Documentation:

Time can take its toll on a historic resource leaving it barely recognizable when compared with its original vision. We strive to peel back the layers of change and uncover the missing and deteriorated features of your historic resource through archival research and one site analysis.

Restoration has to be useful:

Historic buildings can’t always be museums; adaptive reuse is frequently the only way to make a historic building viable. We strive to work with owners, stakeholders and design professionals to develop creative solutions that allow historic buildings to maintain the character we all love while being safe, useful, and efficient.

Preservation doesn’t happen if the numbers don’t work:

We recognize that construction costs are always on the rise and no matter how great a building is it has to work financially. We assist clients in accessing available tax incentives and the limited grants available to offset the costs of these projects. We also guide the project through design to conserve costs wherever possible, then contractor selection so you aren’t paying for people to learn on the job, and then construction so the work is carried out in a way that protects the building and avoids costly mistakes that can arise through incompatible materials and techniques.

Trusted by Our Clients

The Beaux Arts Anderson Post Office is one of the most recognizable buildings on the town’s Main Street. The building served as a funeral home for much of the twentieth century and underwent significant inappropriate alterations including the construction of an entire second flood bisecting the historic interiors. Archival research guided the removal of these alterations and the restoration of the building’s layout and monumental lobby. The Anderson Post office no longer contains a maze of cramped dark spaces, it is once again an airy and vibrant space that hosts community events and fosters commerce.
